3D Scans and 3D Printing

Working with STL data and more

We develop software that enables reading, processing, analyzing, and visualizing 3D data and 3D scans from various sources, and optimizes the data for subsequent 3D printing where needed.

Our software solutions for 3D scans and 3D printing usually include:

  • Working with point clouds
  • Processing data from photogrammetry
  • 3D scans of all kinds, e.g. STL data
  • Model segmentation, smoothing, waterproofing, and more
  • Data preparation for 3D printing
  • 3D volume calculations

Remeshing & Troubleshooting

Good results despite bad meshes

Anyone who has worked extensively with photogrammetry or exports from CAD software will know this problem: many of the generated STL meshes can't be used directly, since they contain errors in the surface structure. That's why we built our at2mesh DLL - a powerful tool that can detect and fix most of the typical error sources in STL files.

  • Manifold check (with/without border)
  • Holes in the surface
  • Detection of connected components and artifacts
  • Check for duplicate points (incl. tolerance)
  • Check for unreferenced points
  • Check for duplicate triangles
  • Check for degenerate triangles / null faces
  • Retopology / remeshing
  • Reduction

Boolean Operations

Advanced boolean operators for 3D modeling

Combine, subtract, and intersect 3D models with precision: our library for advanced boolean operations integrates into your own software or your client projects.

Whether you want to enhance your own software or integrate these capabilities into your client projects: our boolean operations library can be integrated directly in either case.

Extraordinary Plugins

Extensions for all major 3D applications

We've been developing 3D plugins for the 3D community for over 20 years — this experience flows into every new 3D application, from the first idea to release.

Custom 3D software from us can, among other things:

  • Simplify data exchange between software
  • Massively speed up recurring workflows
  • Fully automate individual steps

We develop your custom 3D plugins for MAXON Cinema 4D, Autodesk® 3DS Max®, Autodesk® Maya®, Autodesk® AutoCAD®, Blender, and many other 3D applications.

Render Farm Software & Pipeline Automation

From submit plugin to billing

For over 11 years, we developed and maintained the complete automation of one of the major commercial render farms — and we build such systems for studios with their own farm too. All from a single source:

  • Submit plugins for all common 3D applications (Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Houdini, Modo, and more): checking scenes, collecting assets, preparing jobs
  • Controlling render managers such as Thinkbox Deadline — including custom events, plugins, and monitoring
  • Billing systems: credit purchases, automated invoicing, customer accounts
  • Result handling: automatic delivery, notification, and transfer of finished frames

Whether commercial render farm or internal studio pipeline: we know both worlds from years of hands-on practice.

Blackstar Solutions

A history in 3D plugin development

Under the Blackstar Solutions brand, we developed plugins for over 20 years that made working with Cinema 4D easier and more creative. The many positive reactions from the 3D community always drove us forward and inspired new ideas for improving the workflow of major software brands with all kinds of extensions.

During this time, we learned a great deal about development, from small plugins to large-scale software, and we look forward to every new challenge for fantastic 3D projects, no matter the size.

Frequently Asked Questions about 3D Software Development

Everything you need to know about our 3D development

What does a custom plugin cost? +
Small, specialized plugins — such as an export tool or the automation of a single workflow step — can be built for under €1,000. Larger plugins and standalone solutions depend on feature scope and target platforms. After a free initial consultation, you will receive a proposal with a guaranteed fixed price.
What types of 3D software does at² develop? +
We develop custom 3D solutions such as standalone applications, plugins for existing 3D suites, real-time visualizations, interactive simulations, and tailored 3D libraries. All solutions are precisely adapted to your technical and creative needs.
In which areas is custom 3D software used? +
Our 3D software is used in industry, architecture, education, trade shows, museums, product presentations, AR/VR installations, training systems, and technical visualizations.
Which technologies and engines do you use for 3D development? +
We work with Unity, Unreal, WebGL, OpenGL, Vulkan, and various CAD and DCC formats, among others. Depending on the project, we choose the appropriate engine or build custom 3D modules.
Can you extend or improve existing 3D systems? +
Yes. We develop custom plugins, write new functions for existing pipelines, and optimize existing software for performance, workflows, or usability.
Do you support complex 3D data and large models? +
Yes. We specialize in optimizing large datasets, level-of-detail systems, streaming assets, performance tuning, and converting CAD data for real-time applications.
What does a typical 3D project look like with you? +
After a technical workshop, we create a concept, develop prototypes, test together with you, and then deliver the final application including documentation, maintenance, and support.
Do you also develop Blender add-ons and plugins for other 3D software? +
Yes. We have been developing extensions for practically every 3D application for over 20 years: Cinema 4D, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Houdini, Modo, ZBrush, and more — in total we have sold over 1,600 plugin licenses before focusing on custom development.
Can you automate render farm workflows? +
Yes. For over 11 years we developed the automation of a major commercial render farm: submit plugins for all 3D programs, Deadline control, billing, and result handling. We apply this experience to internal studio farms too.
How do you ensure the security of your 3D software? +
Even for plugins and 3D applications, our code undergoes static analysis (SAST) during development and dynamic security testing (DAST) against running systems. Regular dependency audits ensure that all libraries used are free of known vulnerabilities.
Do you create SBOMs for your 3D software? +
Yes. For every application we create an SBOM (Software Bill of Materials) — a machine-readable inventory of all components and dependencies. This makes it transparent what is inside your software at all times, and we can react immediately when new vulnerabilities are discovered.
Is your 3D software ready for the Cyber Resilience Act? +
The EU Cyber Resilience Act requires manufacturers of products with digital elements to ensure end-to-end cybersecurity from December 2027. Our workflow with SAST, DAST, regular dependency audits, and SBOM generation already covers key CRA requirements today — including plugins and standalone 3D applications.
